Ammonites were cephalopods that resembled a squid with a shell. The predatory mollusks had eyes, tentacles, and spiral shells resembling a nautilus shell. Ammonites are closely related to an octopus without the shell. They appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago with the last descendants disappearing from the record 65 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period.
