With its especially beautiful face conveying engaged contentment and a well-proportioned figure, this is a fine example of classic Yuma artistry. Much of the antique American Indian material on the market was produced to be sold, as with this clay doll. The Yuma Indians were inspired by the success and appeal of the Mojave Indian’s figures, although Yuma Indian production was considerably less. Some restoration to extremities.

Mojave pottery figures were created for the tourist trade after the railroads were built in the late 1800s. The ceramic statues were made in the Mojave’s self-image, adorned with glass beads and painted with bold patterns just as the Mojave’s decorated themselves. The Mojave American’s would have been memorable to see.
