The Yoruba people of Nigeria believe twins are imbued with sacred powers and hold a special place in society. Should a twin die, the family follows specific protocols in choosing a carver to create an “ere ibeji” who will embody the deceased child. Once the figure is enlivened, it becomes a spiritual representation of the deceased twin. The ere ibeji is cared for as if it were the child, bathed, dressed, and fed with the coiffure rubbed with laundry bluing or indigo and red pigment pressed over the body, ensuring the twin's spirit continues to be honored.
